Furnaces:
Count on a York®furnace to give you a warm welcome. Factory

economy, and comfort.
Gas Furnaces
Most home comfort systems have two parts: an outdoor air conditioner
or heat pump, and an indoor unit, a furnace. Furnaces heat and circulate
warm air in the winter. They also take cool air from the outdoor unit
and circulate it through your home in summer. The indoor and outdoor
units are designed to work together. When the furnace is properly matched
with a heat pump or air conditioner, you enjoy maximum efficiency and
extended system life. Furnace heating ability is measured with an Annual
Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) percentage. A higher AFUE percentage
indicates a more efficient furnace.
The basic components of a furnace system are:
A Burner, where gas (natural or propane) or oil is delivered and burned
A Heat Exchanger, where the heat from the burning gas is transferred
to the air distribution system
Ductwork to transfer the heated air throughout the home
A Flue or Vent Pipe, to exhaust byproducts of combustion (such as water
vapor and carbon dioxide) outside

Heating Tips
Set your thermostat as low as is
comfortable, Clean or replace filters on furnaces once a month., Clean
warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed; make
sure they're not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes. Bleed trapped
air from hot-water radiators once or twice a season; if in doubt about
how to perform this task, call a professional. Place heat-resistant
radiator reflectors between exterior walls and the radiators.Use kitchen,
bath, and other ventilating fans wisely; in just 1 hour, these fans
can pull out a houseful of warmed or cooled air. Turn fans off as soon
as they have done the job.Keep draperies and shades open on south-facing
windows during the heating season to allow sunlight to enter your home;
close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.
Close an unoccupied room that is isolated from the rest of the house,
such as in a corner, and turn down the thermostat or turn off the heating.
However, do not turn the heating off if it adversely affects the rest
of your system. For example, if you heat your house with a heat pump,
do not close the vents-closing the vents could harm the heat pump.Select
energy-efficient equipment when you buy new heating equipment. Your
contractor should be able to give you energy fact sheets for different
types, models, and designs to help you compare energy usage. Look for
the ENERGY STARr label. The ENERGY STARr is a program of the U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designed
to help consumers identify energy-efficient appliances and products.
Air Conditioning Tips
Don't cool unused areas. Close
doors and registers to cut energy costs.
Keep the shades drawn in your house and the lights off. It will keep
the temperature in your home cooler.
remove any vines near the air conditioning unit. They can easily grow
and intertwine themselves throughout the unit
Operate stove, oven and dishwashers in the morning or evening when it's
cooler outside.
Set the temperature at 78 degrees when home, higher when the home is
not occupied. install a programmable thermostat. Ceiling fans &
whole house fans cool fast and cost much less to operate than air conditioning.
Don't obstruct air registers with furniture, carpeting or drapes
Replace incandescent lights with florescent lights or at least reduce
the wattage of light bulbs in your lamps and light fixtures. Check the
refrigerant charge. The fluid in your air conditioner is a special refrigerant
gas that is put in when the system is installed. If it is overcharged
or undercharged it will not work efficiently. This service must be performed
by a qualified technician who is licensed and equipped to recapture
any escaping gas from escaping into the atmosphere.
Cleaning Filters
Filters require cleaning or replacement because as they accumulate dirt,
block up, reduce airflow and the cooling capacity of the air conditioner.
In addition some types lose filtration efficiency as they get dirty.
There are a large number of different types of filter with different
requirements. If you have a proper maintenance manual for the installation,
refer to the manual for cleaning instructions. If you don't have the
manual, the normal cleaning requirements are as follows:
Return air grille filters: these filters are generally in hinged filter
frames attached to the return air grille. These filters are really residential
filters, unless they are used in conjunction with another higher efficiency
filter or air cleaner. These filters are generally of the washable type
and should be cleaned by gently washing with water. If they won't clean,
use a mild detergent. These filters usually require very frequent cleaning,
at least monthly, and often more frequently.
Deep bed filters: These are large filters usually 400 to 600 mm deep.
These may be of the washable or disposable kind. The life of these varies
depending on the design and the amount of dust they are subject to.
In general you should get at least 12 months life, and sometimes up
to three years life between cleanings or replacement. It is generally
better to get your air conditioning service company to service these.
Electronic Air Cleaners: These may be stand alone units or incorporated
into the ductwork. The cores generally require cleaning approximately
once per month.
Insulation:
Some older homes have poor insulation. wall insulation can compact and
leave gaps at top while ceiling insulation should be checked for proper
thickness and any areas exposed by maintenance. Check under floor insulation
is properly strapped into place and repair any portions hanging loose
or overly compressed. An insulation barrier is often no stronger than
its weakest link so concentrate on finding the weak points.
